Xolegel

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Xolegel is a topical antifungal medication, specifically a gel formulation of the drug ketoconazole. It is primarily used in the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis, a common skin condition that causes redness, scaly patches, and dandruff. Xolegel is manufactured by Aqua Pharmaceuticals, an American specialty pharmaceutical company.

Composition[edit | edit source]

Xolegel contains 2% ketoconazole, an antifungal medication that works by preventing the growth of fungus. It is a broad-spectrum synthetic antifungal agent that inhibits the growth and reproduction of many fungal organisms by interfering with the formation of the fungal cell membrane.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Xolegel is used to treat skin infections such as athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm, and certain kinds of dandruff. It is also used to treat a skin condition known as pityriasis, which causes lightening or darkening of the skin of the neck, chest, arms, or legs.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of Xolegel include burning, stinging, or redness at the application site. If these effects persist or worsen, the patient should notify their doctor or pharmacist promptly. More serious side effects, though rare, include hair loss, acne, or eye swelling.

Precautions[edit | edit source]

Before using Xolegel, patients should inform their healthcare provider if they are allergic to it, or to other azole antifungals. It's also important to discuss the patient's medical history, especially of liver disease, alcohol use, and low testosterone levels.

Application[edit | edit source]

Xolegel is usually applied once daily or as directed by a healthcare provider. It is important to use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help remember, use it at the same time each day.
