Ampulla of vas deferens
(Redirected from Ampulla ductus deferentis)
Ampulla of Vas Deferens[edit | edit source]
The ampulla of vas deferens is an anatomical structure in the male reproductive system. It is a dilation of the vas deferens, which is a muscular tube that transports sperm from the epididymis in anticipation of ejaculation.
Anatomy[edit | edit source]
The ampulla of vas deferens is located at the distal end of the vas deferens, near the base of the bladder. It is a widened section of the vas deferens that serves as a reservoir for sperm. The ampulla is situated just before the vas deferens joins the seminal vesicle to form the ejaculatory duct.
Function[edit | edit source]
The primary function of the ampulla of vas deferens is to store sperm and contribute to the maturation process. During ejaculation, the smooth muscle in the walls of the ampulla contracts, propelling sperm into the ejaculatory duct. The ampulla also secretes a fluid that nourishes the sperm and facilitates their movement.
Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]
The ampulla of vas deferens can be involved in certain medical conditions. For example, blockages or obstructions in the ampulla can lead to male infertility. Additionally, the ampulla may be examined during procedures such as a vasectomy reversal, where the patency of the vas deferens is assessed.
