A gliding joint between the distal ends of the tibia and fibula and the proximal end of the talus.

Ankle joint can have the following movements:

Bones[edit | edit source]

There are 3 bones in the ankle joint - tibia, fibula and calcaneum

Ligaments[edit | edit source]

  • The deltoid ligament supports the medial side of the joint
  • The anterior and posterior talofibular ligaments support the lateral side of the joint
  • The calcaneofibular ligament is attached at the lateral malleolus and to the lateral surface of the calcaneus.

Injuries[edit | edit source]

Injuries to the ankle region are very common starting from simple strains and sprains to the complex fractures and other injuries.
