Carlos Saavedra Lamas (November 1, 1878 – May 5, 1959) was an Argentine diplomat and politician who served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Argentina from 1932 to 1938. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1936 for his work in international diplomacy and peace efforts, particularly for his role in mediating the Chaco War between Bolivia and Paraguay.

Carlos Saavedra Lamas was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, into a prominent family with a strong political background. He studied law at the University of Buenos Aires, where he graduated with a degree in law in 1903. His early career was marked by his involvement in academia, where he served as a professor of labor law and public law.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Saavedra Lamas began his political career as a member of the Argentine Chamber of Deputies, where he served from 1908 to 1912. He was a member of the National Democratic Party. His political career advanced when he was appointed as the Minister of Justice and Public Instruction from 1915 to 1916.
Contributions to International Diplomacy[edit | edit source]
As Minister of Foreign Affairs, Saavedra Lamas played a crucial role in the resolution of the Chaco War, a conflict between Bolivia and Paraguay over the Gran Chaco region. He proposed the "Saavedra Lamas Treaty," which was a non-aggression pact signed by several Latin American countries, promoting peace and cooperation in the region.
His efforts in international diplomacy were recognized globally, leading to his receipt of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1936. He was the first Latin American to receive this prestigious award.
