Devil's Throat at Punta Sur

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Devil's Throat at Punta Sur is a natural formation located on the southern tip of Cozumel, an island in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. It is a part of the larger Punta Sur Eco Beach Park, which is a protected area that covers 247 acres.

Overview[edit | edit source]

The Devil's Throat at Punta Sur is a unique geological formation, a series of interconnected underwater caverns and tunnels that form a challenging dive site. The formation is named for its throat-like shape, which divers enter through a narrow opening before descending into the caverns below.

Geology[edit | edit source]

The formation of the Devil's Throat at Punta Sur is a result of the natural erosion of the limestone bedrock that makes up much of Cozumel's subterranean landscape. Over time, the action of the sea and the weather has worn away the rock, creating the caverns and tunnels that make up the Devil's Throat.

Diving[edit | edit source]

Diving at the Devil's Throat at Punta Sur is considered to be one of the most challenging dive sites in Cozumel. The dive begins with a descent into a narrow opening, before divers navigate a series of tight passages and caverns. The dive is considered to be particularly challenging due to the strong currents and the complexity of the underwater topography.

Flora and Fauna[edit | edit source]

The Devil's Throat at Punta Sur and the surrounding area is home to a diverse range of marine life. Divers can expect to see a variety of tropical fish, as well as larger species such as barracuda and nurse sharks. The area is also home to a number of unique species of coral and other marine invertebrates.
