North-East India is a region located in the easternmost part of India. It comprises eight states: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura. The region shares an international border of 5,182 kilometers with several neighboring countries including China, Myanmar, Bhutan, and Bangladesh. It comprises about 8 percent of India's total geographical area, with a population of over 45 million people.

The geography of North-East India is diverse, with the Himalayan Range and Brahmaputra Valley plains. The region is rich in biodiversity and is home to several national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, including the Kaziranga National Park and Manas National Park, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Culture[edit | edit source]

The culture of North-East India is a blend of tribal and Indo-Aryan cultures. The region is known for its distinctive traditional arts, including music, dance, and handicrafts. Festivals such as the Bihu of Assam, Hornbill Festival of Nagaland, and Gangtok Festival of Sikkim are major cultural events.

Cuisine[edit | edit source]

The cuisine of North-East India is varied and unique, with each state having its own traditional dishes. Rice is the staple food, accompanied by fish, meat, and a variety of vegetables. Some of the popular dishes include Assam's Masor Tenga (sour fish curry), Manipur's Eromba (a fermented fish and vegetable dish), and Nagaland's Smoked Pork with bamboo shoot.

The economy of North-East India is primarily agrarian, with tea, rice, and jute being the main crops. The region is also rich in natural resources such as oil, natural gas, and minerals. In recent years, there has been a significant growth in the sectors of tourism, IT, and telecommunications.

Education[edit | edit source]

North-East India has several renowned educational institutions, including Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, North Eastern Hill University, and Tezpur University. The literacy rate in the region is higher than the national average, with Mizoram having the second highest literacy rate in India.
