RARAF
Template:Infobox research facility
The Radiological Research Accelerator Facility (RARAF) is a specialized research facility located at Columbia University in New York. It is dedicated to the study of the biological effects of radiation and the development of new techniques for radiation therapy.
History[edit | edit source]
RARAF was established in 1969 as part of the Radiological Research Laboratory at Columbia University. It was created to provide a unique resource for the study of radiation effects on biological systems. Over the years, RARAF has contributed significantly to the understanding of radiation biology and has been involved in numerous collaborative research projects.
Research Focus[edit | edit source]
The primary focus of RARAF is on the effects of ionizing radiation on living organisms. This includes studying the mechanisms of DNA damage and repair, the effects of radiation on cell cycle progression, and the development of radiation-induced cancer.
RARAF is also involved in the development of new techniques for radiation therapy, including the use of microbeam radiation therapy and proton therapy. These techniques aim to improve the precision and effectiveness of cancer treatments while minimizing damage to healthy tissues.
Facilities and Equipment[edit | edit source]
RARAF is equipped with a variety of advanced instruments and facilities, including:
- A particle accelerator for generating high-energy radiation beams.
- A microbeam facility for delivering precise doses of radiation to specific cells or tissues.
- Advanced imaging systems for studying the effects of radiation at the cellular and molecular levels.
Collaborations[edit | edit source]
RARAF collaborates with numerous institutions and researchers worldwide. These collaborations help to advance the understanding of radiation effects and improve radiation therapy techniques. Notable collaborators include the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the United States Department of Energy (DOE).
Education and Outreach[edit | edit source]
RARAF is committed to education and outreach, providing training opportunities for students and researchers in the field of radiation biology. The facility hosts workshops, seminars, and training programs to disseminate knowledge and promote collaboration among scientists.
