Aaron Henry (July 2, 1922 – May 19, 1997) was a prominent American civil rights leader, politician, and pharmacist. He played a significant role in the Civil Rights Movement and was a key figure in the struggle for racial equality in the United States, particularly in his home state of Mississippi.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Aaron Henry was born in Coahoma County, Mississippi, to sharecropper parents. Despite the challenges of growing up in the segregated South, Henry pursued education with determination. He attended the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, where he earned a degree in pharmacy. This education not only provided him with a professional career but also exposed him to the ideas of racial equality and justice.

Civil Rights Activism[edit | edit source]

Henry's involvement in the Civil Rights Movement began in earnest in the 1950s. He was a founding member of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP), which challenged the all-white delegation at the 1964 Democratic National Convention. The MFDP's efforts were instrumental in highlighting the exclusion of African Americans from the political process in Mississippi.

Henry also served as the president of the Mississippi chapter of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) from 1959 to 1993. Under his leadership, the NAACP in Mississippi became a powerful force for change, advocating for voting rights, desegregation, and equal opportunities for African Americans.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

In addition to his activism, Aaron Henry was also involved in politics. He was elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives in 1982, where he served until 1996. As a legislator, Henry continued to fight for civil rights and social justice, focusing on issues such as education, healthcare, and economic development.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Aaron Henry's contributions to the Civil Rights Movement and his efforts to improve the lives of African Americans in Mississippi have left a lasting impact. His work helped pave the way for future generations of African American leaders and activists. Henry's life and career are a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of standing up for justice and equality.
