Fundus uteri

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Fundus uteri is the anatomical term for the upper part of the uterus. It is a major component of the female reproductive system and plays a crucial role in pregnancy and childbirth.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The fundus uteri is located above the entrance of the fallopian tubes into the uterus, and it is opposite to the cervix, the lower part of the uterus. It is the broad, curved, upper part of the uterus, and it is where the uterine wall is the thickest. The shape and size of the fundus can change depending on various factors, such as whether a woman has been pregnant before and the phase of the menstrual cycle.

Function[edit | edit source]

The fundus uteri plays a significant role in the female reproductive system. During pregnancy, the fundus grows and expands to accommodate the developing fetus. It is also involved in the contractions that occur during childbirth.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

The size and shape of the fundus uteri can be an important indicator of various health conditions. For example, an enlarged fundus can be a sign of uterine fibroids, pregnancy, or uterine cancer. A healthcare provider may palpate the fundus during a physical examination or use imaging techniques such as ultrasound to assess its size and shape.
