Leverano DOC

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Leverano DOC is a Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) wine designation for wines produced in the Salento region of Puglia, Italy. The region is known for its fertile soil and Mediterranean climate, which are ideal for viticulture. The Leverano DOC was established in 1985 and covers red, white, and rosé wines.

History[edit | edit source]

The history of viticulture in the Leverano area dates back to the Roman times. The region's wine production flourished during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, with the wines being exported to other parts of Italy and Europe. The Leverano DOC was established in 1985 to protect and promote the quality of the wines produced in the region.

Geography and Climate[edit | edit source]

The Leverano DOC is located in the Salento region of Puglia, in the heel of Italy's boot. The region is characterized by its flat terrain, fertile soil, and Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. These conditions are ideal for viticulture, allowing the grapes to ripen fully and develop complex flavors.

Grape Varieties[edit | edit source]

The Leverano DOC allows for the production of red, white, and rosé wines. The main grape varieties used are Negroamaro, Malvasia Nera, and Primitivo for red and rosé wines, and Verdeca, Malvasia Bianca, and Bombino Bianco for white wines. The wines are known for their full-bodied, fruity character and high alcohol content.

Wine Styles and Production[edit | edit source]

The Leverano DOC regulations specify the grape varieties, yield limits, and winemaking techniques that can be used. Red and rosé wines must be made from at least 70% Negroamaro, with the remainder made up of other permitted varieties. White wines must be made from at least 50% Verdeca, with the remainder made up of other permitted varieties. The wines are typically aged in oak barrels to enhance their flavor and complexity.

Food Pairing[edit | edit source]

Leverano DOC wines are versatile and can be paired with a variety of dishes. Red and rosé wines pair well with hearty meat dishes, pasta with tomato-based sauces, and aged cheeses. White wines are ideal with seafood, poultry, and light pasta dishes.
