Robert Malenka - Professor at Stanford University

Robert C. Malenka is an American neuroscientist known for his pioneering research in the field of synaptic plasticity, particularly in relation to long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD). He is currently a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University and the deputy director of the Stanford Neurosciences Institute.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Robert Malenka was born in New York City. He completed his undergraduate studies at Harvard University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in biochemistry. He then pursued a combined M.D./Ph.D. program at the Stanford University School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree and a doctorate in neuroscience.

Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his education, Malenka conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) under the mentorship of Roger Nicoll. During this time, he made significant contributions to the understanding of synaptic plasticity mechanisms.

Malenka joined the faculty at UCSF, where he continued his research on synaptic plasticity and its implications for neuropsychiatric disorders. In 1999, he returned to Stanford University as a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences.

Research Contributions[edit | edit source]

Malenka's research has focused on the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying synaptic plasticity. His work on LTP and LTD has provided critical insights into how neurons communicate and adapt, which has implications for learning and memory. He has also explored the role of synaptic plasticity in addiction, depression, and other neuropsychiatric conditions.
