Sloppy joe

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Sloppy Joe is a traditional American dish, typically consisting of ground beef or pork, onions, tomato sauce or ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and other seasonings, served on a hamburger bun. The dish originated in the United States and is popular in both homes and diners.

History[edit | edit source]

The origin of the Sloppy Joe is somewhat disputed. Some sources attribute the creation of the dish to a cook named Joe in a cafe in Sioux City, Iowa in the 1930s. Others claim that the dish was created by the food company Hunt's in the 1960s as a way to promote their new product, canned Manwich sauce. Regardless of its origins, the Sloppy Joe has become a staple of American cuisine.

Preparation[edit | edit source]

The basic ingredients of a Sloppy Joe are ground beef or pork, onions, tomato sauce or ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce. The meat is browned in a skillet, then the onions are added and sautéed until they are soft. The tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and other seasonings are then added and the mixture is simmered until it is thick and flavorful. The Sloppy Joe mixture is then served on a hamburger bun.

Variations[edit | edit source]

There are many variations of the Sloppy Joe. Some recipes call for the addition of vegetables such as bell peppers or celery. Others use different types of meat, such as turkey or venison. There are also vegetarian and vegan versions of the Sloppy Joe that use lentils or tofu in place of the meat.

In different regions of the United States, the Sloppy Joe may be known by different names, such as "loose meat sandwiches" in the Midwest or "dynamites" in Rhode Island. In some areas, the term "Sloppy Joe" refers to a completely different dish: a cold deli sandwich consisting of two types of meat, cheese, and coleslaw.

In popular culture[edit | edit source]

The Sloppy Joe has been featured in numerous films, television shows, and books, often as a symbol of American home cooking or diner food. It is also a popular dish in school cafeterias.
