"Who Shot Mr. Burns?" is a two-part episode of the American animated television series The Simpsons. The episodes serve as the season finale of the sixth season and the premiere of the seventh season. The first part aired on the Fox network on May 21, 1995, and the second part aired on September 17, 1995.

Plot[edit | edit source]

The story begins with Springfield Elementary School discovering oil beneath the school. Mr. Burns, the owner of the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant, devises a plan to take the oil for himself, which leads to a series of events that make him the target of many Springfield residents' anger. In the climax of Part One, Mr. Burns is shot by an unknown assailant.

Part Two follows the Springfield Police Department's investigation into the shooting. Waylon Smithers initially believes he is the culprit, but it is later revealed that Maggie Simpson accidentally shot Mr. Burns while trying to take a lollipop from her.

The episode was written by Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein, and directed by Jeffrey Lynch (Part One) and Wes Archer (Part Two). The writers were inspired by the Dallas episode "A House Divided", which featured the famous "Who shot J.R.?" storyline.

The episode contains numerous references to popular culture, including the television series Dallas, the film Citizen Kane, and the board game Clue.
