Acute sinusitis

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Acute Sinusitis is a common medical condition characterized by inflammation of the sinus cavities. It is often caused by a viral infection, but can also be due to a bacterial or fungal infection. Acute sinusitis typically lasts for less than four weeks and is often associated with a cold or other respiratory infection.

Causes[edit | edit source]

The most common cause of acute sinusitis is a viral infection, often following a common cold. Other causes can include bacterial infections, fungal infections, and allergies. In some cases, acute sinusitis can also be caused by a physical obstruction in the sinus cavities, such as a nasal polyp or a deviated septum.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

Symptoms of acute sinusitis can vary, but often include facial pain or pressure, nasal congestion, thick nasal discharge, and reduced sense of smell. Other symptoms can include fever, bad breath, fatigue, dental pain, and cough.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of acute sinusitis is typically based on the patient's symptoms and a physical examination. In some cases, a CT scan or MRI may be used to confirm the diagnosis and assess the severity of the condition.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for acute sinusitis depends on the cause. If the condition is caused by a bacterial infection, antibiotics may be prescribed. For cases caused by a viral infection, treatment typically involves managing symptoms and supporting the body's immune response. This can include rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications to relieve pain and congestion.

Prevention[edit | edit source]

Prevention of acute sinusitis involves reducing exposure to infections and managing allergies effectively. This can include regular hand washing, avoiding close contact with people who have respiratory infections, and managing allergies with medication or immunotherapy.
