Hollywood Pictures
Hollywood Pictures was an American film production label of The Walt Disney Studios, a division of The Walt Disney Company. Established in 1989, Hollywood Pictures was intended to release films that were more mature and adult-oriented than those typically associated with the Disney brand. The label was discontinued in 2007.
History[edit | edit source]
Hollywood Pictures was founded on February 1, 1989, by Michael Eisner, then CEO of The Walt Disney Company. The creation of Hollywood Pictures was part of a strategy to diversify Disney's film output and to produce films that would appeal to a broader audience, including more mature themes that would not fit under the Walt Disney Pictures or Touchstone Pictures labels.
The first film released under the Hollywood Pictures banner was Arachnophobia in 1990. The label went on to produce a number of successful films throughout the 1990s, including The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992), Tombstone (1993), and The Sixth Sense (1999).
Notable Films[edit | edit source]
- Arachnophobia (1990)
- The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992)
- Tombstone (1993)
- The Joy Luck Club (1993)
- The Sixth Sense (1999)
Closure[edit | edit source]
In the early 2000s, Hollywood Pictures' output began to decline. The label was officially discontinued in 2007 as part of a reorganization of Disney's film production operations. Many of the functions and projects of Hollywood Pictures were absorbed by other Disney labels, including Touchstone Pictures and Walt Disney Pictures.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Despite its relatively short lifespan, Hollywood Pictures made a significant impact on the film industry by producing a number of memorable and successful films. The label is remembered for its contribution to diversifying Disney's film portfolio and for its role in producing films that appealed to a more mature audience.
