Lamisil

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Lamisil (also known as Terbinafine) is an antifungal medication used to treat fungal infections in the skin, fingernails, and toenails. It is a member of the allylamine class of antifungal agents and works by inhibiting the enzyme squalene epoxidase, which is necessary for the synthesis of ergosterol, a critical component of fungal cell membranes.

Medical Uses[edit | edit source]

Lamisil is primarily used to treat dermatophyte infections of the skin and nails, including tinea pedis (athlete's foot), tinea corporis (ringworm), and tinea cruris (jock itch). It is also used to treat onychomycosis, a fungal infection of the nails.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of Lamisil include headache, nausea, diarrhea, rash, and abdominal pain. Serious side effects may include liver disease, allergic reactions, and Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Lamisil works by inhibiting the enzyme squalene epoxidase, which is necessary for the synthesis of ergosterol. This results in a deficiency of ergosterol in the fungal cell wall, leading to fungal cell death.

History[edit | edit source]

Lamisil was first approved for medical use in the United States in 1996. It is available as a generic medication.
