Diquafosol tetrasodium
Diquafosol tetrasodium is a medication primarily used in the treatment of dry eye syndrome. It is classified as a P2Y2 purinergic receptor agonist, which promotes the secretion of water and mucin on the ocular surface, thereby improving tear film stability and alleviating dry eye symptoms.
Pharmacology[edit | edit source]
Diquafosol tetrasodium is a P2Y2 purinergic receptor agonist. It works by stimulating the P2Y2 receptors found on the ocular surface, leading to an increase in the secretion of water, mucin, and other tear film components from the conjunctival goblet cells and lacrimal glands. This results in improved tear film stability and reduced symptoms of dry eye.
Clinical Use[edit | edit source]
Diquafosol tetrasodium is primarily used in the treatment of dry eye syndrome, a condition characterized by insufficient tear production or excessive tear evaporation. It is particularly effective in patients with Sjögren's syndrome, a systemic autoimmune disease that often presents with severe dry eye symptoms.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Common side effects of Diquafosol tetrasodium include eye irritation, eye pain, and blurred vision. Rare but serious side effects may include allergic reactions, severe eye pain, and vision changes.
History[edit | edit source]
Diquafosol tetrasodium was first approved for use in Japan in 2010, and has since been approved in several other countries, including South Korea and the United States.
