Lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide tablets are indicated for the treatment of hypertension, to lower blood pressure.

What are the uses of this medicine?[edit | edit source]

  • The combination of lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide is used to treat high blood pressure.
  • Lisinopril is in a class of medications called angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors.
  • It works by decreasing certain chemicals that tighten the blood vessels, so blood flows more smoothly.
  • Hydrochlorothiazide is in a class of medications called diuretics ('water pills').
  • It works by causing the kidneys to get rid of unneeded water and salt from the body into the urine.

Who Should Not Use Lisinopril + HCTZ  ?[edit | edit source]

  • ZESTORETIC is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to this product and in patients with a history of angioedema related to previous treatment with an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor and in patients with hereditary or idiopathic angioedema.
  • Because of the hydrochlorothiazide component, this product is contraindicated in patients with anuria or hypersensitivity to other sulfonamide-derived drugs.

Is this medicine FDA approved[edit | edit source]

  • The combination was approved for medical use in the United States in 1989.
  • It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines. It is available as a generic medication.
  • In 2018, it was the 51st most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 15 million prescriptions.

How should this medicine be used?[edit | edit source]

Lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide tablets are available for oral use in three tablet combinations of lisinopril with hydrochlorothiazide: lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide tablets, 10 mg/12.5 mg, 20 mg/12.5 mg, and 20 mg/25 mg.

What are the dosage forms and brand names of this medicine?[edit | edit source]

Lisinopril monotherapy is an effective treatment of hypertension in once-daily doses of 10 mg to 80 mg, while hydrochlorothiazide monotherapy is effective in doses of 12.5 mg per day to 50 mg per day.

  • Zestoretic®

Common possible side effects of this medicine include:

  • heartburn
  • headache
  • dizziness
  • excessive tiredness
  • cough
  • decrease in sexual ability
  • pain, burning, or tingling in the hands or feet

Some serious side effects may include:

  • stomach pain
  • hoarseness
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • vomiting
  • upset stomach
  • yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • fever, sore throat, chills, and other signs of infection
  • muscle pain, cramps, or weakness
  • fainting
  • dry mouth
  • thirst
  • weakness
  • restlessness
  • confusion
  • seizures
  • decrease in urination
  • lightheadedness
  • chest pain
  • rapid, pounding, slow, or irregular heartbeat
  • pain in big toe
  • tingling in arms and legs
  • loss of muscle tone
  • weakness or heaviness in legs
  • lack of energy
  • cold, gray skin
  • swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs

What to do in case of emergency/overdose?[edit | edit source]

  • No specific information is available on the treatment of overdosage with lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide.
  • Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
  • Therapy with lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide should be discontinued and the patient observed closely.
  • Suggested measures include induction of emesis and/or gastric lavage, and correction of dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and hypotension by established procedures.

Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • lightheadedness
  • dry mouth
  • blurred vision
  • Fianting
  • thirst
  • drowsiness
  • weakness
  • seizures
  • restlessness
  • infrequent urination
  • muscle pains or cramps
  • vomiting
  • upset stomach
  • confusion
  • rapid or pounding heartbeat

Can this medicine be used in pregnency?[edit | edit source]

  • When used in pregnancy during the second and third trimesters, ACE inhibitors can cause injury and even death to the developing fetus.
  • When pregnancy is detected, Lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide should be discontinued as soon as possible.

Can this medicine be used for Pediatrics?[edit | edit source]

  • Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients have not been established.

What should I know about storage and disposal of this medication?[edit | edit source]

  • Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children.
  • Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom).
