Óscar Arias
Óscar Arias Sánchez is a prominent Costa Rican politician and economist who served as the President of Costa Rica from 1986 to 1990 and again from 2006 to 2010. He is best known for his efforts in promoting peace in Central America, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Óscar Arias was born on September 13, 1940, in Heredia, Costa Rica. He hails from a wealthy family with a strong political background. Arias pursued his higher education at the University of Costa Rica, where he earned a degree in law and economics. He furthered his studies in the United Kingdom, obtaining a doctorate in political science from the University of Essex and studying at the London School of Economics.

Arias began his political career as a member of the National Liberation Party (PLN). He served as Minister of Planning and Economic Policy from 1972 to 1977 under President José Figueres Ferrer.
First Presidency (1986-1990)[edit | edit source]
Óscar Arias was elected President of Costa Rica in 1986. During his first term, he focused on economic reforms and social programs. However, his most significant achievement was the promotion of peace in Central America. Arias proposed the Esquipulas Peace Agreement, which aimed to end the civil wars in the region. His efforts culminated in the signing of the Esquipulas II Accord in 1987, which laid the groundwork for peace in countries like Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Guatemala.
Nobel Peace Prize[edit | edit source]
In recognition of his efforts to bring peace to Central America, Óscar Arias was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987. The award brought international attention to the peace process and bolstered Arias's reputation as a peacemaker.
Second Presidency (2006-2010)[edit | edit source]
Arias returned to the presidency in 2006 after a constitutional amendment allowed him to run for a second term. During his second administration, he focused on free trade agreements, including the controversial Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). His government also worked on improving infrastructure and education.
