Brave is a 2012 American computer-animated fantasy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The film was directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, co-directed by Steve Purcell, and produced by Katherine Sarafian. The screenplay was written by Andrews, Purcell, Chapman, and Irene Mecchi, based on a story by Chapman. The film features the voices of Kelly Macdonald, Emma Thompson, Billy Connolly, Julie Walters, Robbie Coltrane, Kevin McKidd, and Craig Ferguson.

Plot[edit | edit source]

The story is set in the Scottish Highlands and follows Princess Merida, a skilled archer and the impetuous daughter of King Fergus and Queen Elinor. Merida defies an age-old custom, causing chaos in the kingdom by expressing the desire to carve her own path in life. In her quest for independence, she seeks help from a witch, who grants her an ill-fated wish. Merida must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo a beastly curse and discover the true meaning of courage.

Characters[edit | edit source]

  • Princess Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald): The film's protagonist, a headstrong and skilled archer.
  • Queen Elinor (voiced by Emma Thompson): Merida's mother, who values tradition and propriety.
  • King Fergus (voiced by Billy Connolly): Merida's father, known for his strength and bravery.
  • The Witch (voiced by Julie Walters): A mysterious old woman who grants Merida's wish.
  • Lord Dingwall (voiced by Robbie Coltrane): One of the clan leaders.
  • Lord MacGuffin (voiced by Kevin McKidd): Another clan leader.
  • Lord Macintosh (voiced by Craig Ferguson): The third clan leader.

Production[edit | edit source]

The film's development began in 2006, with Brenda Chapman as the original director. Chapman conceived the project as a fairy tale inspired by her relationship with her daughter. In October 2010, Chapman was replaced by Mark Andrews following creative disagreements. The film's animation was done using Pixar's proprietary software, and it was the first Pixar film to use the Dolby Atmos sound format.

Music[edit | edit source]

The film's score was composed by Patrick Doyle, a Scottish composer known for his work on films such as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Thor. The soundtrack features a blend of traditional Scottish music and original compositions.

Release[edit | edit source]

Brave premiered on June 10, 2012, at the Seattle International Film Festival and was released in the United States on June 22, 2012. The film was a box office success, grossing over $540 million worldwide. It received positive reviews from critics, who praised its animation, voice acting, and musical score.

Accolades[edit | edit source]

Brave won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film, and the BAFTA Award for Best Animated Film.
