Carbon neutrality
Carbon neutrality is the state of net-zero carbon dioxide emissions. This can be achieved by balancing emissions of carbon dioxide with its removal (often through carbon offsetting) or by eliminating emissions from society (the latter is known as a zero-carbon footprint). The concept is central to efforts to combat climate change, as carbon dioxide is a major contributor to global warming.

Carbon neutrality involves calculating the total carbon emissions produced by an individual, organization, event, or product and then compensating for those emissions through a combination of reducing emissions and contributing to carbon offset projects. These projects can include renewable energy initiatives, reforestation, and development of carbon capture and storage technologies.

To achieve carbon neutrality, entities must first measure their carbon footprint through a greenhouse gas inventory. This process identifies and quantifies the sources of emissions. Once the sources are known, a plan can be developed to reduce or eliminate those emissions. These include the technological and financial barriers to transitioning away from fossil fuels, the need for substantial investment in renewable energy and carbon capture technologies, and the complexities of measuring and verifying carbon offsets.

Pursuing carbon neutrality can have numerous benefits beyond mitigating climate change. These include improved public health due to reduced air pollution, economic opportunities in green technologies, and enhanced energy security.
