David R. Liu is a prominent American chemical biologist and geneticist. He is known for his pioneering work in the fields of genome editing, directed evolution, and synthetic biology. Liu is a professor at Harvard University and a core institute member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

David R. Liu was born in California. He completed his undergraduate studies in chemistry at Harvard University, where he graduated summa cum laude. Liu then pursued his Ph.D. in organic chemistry at University of California, Berkeley, under the supervision of Peter G. Schultz.

Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his Ph.D., Liu joined the faculty of Harvard University in 1999. He has since made significant contributions to the field of chemical biology. Liu's research focuses on the development of new methods for genome editing and the creation of novel therapeutics.

Genome Editing[edit | edit source]

Liu is best known for his work on base editing, a revolutionary genome editing technology that allows for precise, irreversible conversion of one DNA base pair into another without causing double-strand breaks. This technology has the potential to correct a wide range of genetic disorders.

Directed Evolution[edit | edit source]

Liu has also made significant contributions to the field of directed evolution, a method used to engineer proteins with new and useful properties. His work in this area has led to the development of new enzymes and therapeutics.

Synthetic Biology[edit | edit source]

In the field of synthetic biology, Liu's research has focused on the creation of new biological systems and the reprogramming of existing ones. His work has applications in areas such as medicine, biotechnology, and environmental science.

Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]

David R. Liu has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to science, including the American Chemical Society's Pure Chemistry Award and the National Institutes of Health Director's Pioneer Award. He is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]
