Diabetes Hands Foundation
Diabetes Hands Foundation
The Diabetes Hands Foundation (DHF) was a non-profit organization dedicated to connecting, empowering, and mobilizing the diabetes community. Founded in 2008 by Manny Hernandez, the foundation aimed to provide support and resources for individuals living with diabetes and their loved ones.
History[edit | edit source]
The Diabetes Hands Foundation was established in 2008 by Manny Hernandez, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2002. The foundation was created to address the emotional and social needs of people with diabetes, which were often overlooked by traditional medical care.
Programs and Initiatives[edit | edit source]
The Diabetes Hands Foundation was known for several key programs and initiatives designed to support the diabetes community:
TuDiabetes[edit | edit source]
TuDiabetes was an online community for people with diabetes, providing a platform for members to share experiences, ask questions, and offer support. The community included forums, blogs, and live events.
EsTuDiabetes[edit | edit source]
EsTuDiabetes was the Spanish-language counterpart to TuDiabetes, serving the needs of Spanish-speaking individuals with diabetes. It offered similar resources and support as TuDiabetes.
Big Blue Test[edit | edit source]
The Big Blue Test was an annual initiative that encouraged people with diabetes to test their blood sugar, exercise for 14-20 minutes, and test again. Participants would then share their results online. The program aimed to raise awareness about the benefits of physical activity for managing diabetes and to support diabetes-related charities.
Diabetes Advocates[edit | edit source]
The Diabetes Advocates program was a network of individuals and organizations working to raise awareness and advocate for people with diabetes. The program provided resources, training, and support to help advocates make a difference in their communities.
Merger with Beyond Type 1[edit | edit source]
In 2017, the Diabetes Hands Foundation merged with Beyond Type 1, another non-profit organization focused on diabetes. The merger aimed to combine resources and efforts to better serve the diabetes community.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Although the Diabetes Hands Foundation is no longer active as an independent organization, its programs and initiatives continue to impact the diabetes community through Beyond Type 1. The foundation's work has left a lasting legacy of support, empowerment, and advocacy for people with diabetes.
