The European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) is an agency of the European Union established in 1993. It is headquartered in Lisbon, Portugal. The EMCDDA provides the EU and its member states with a factual overview of European drug problems and a solid evidence base to support the drugs debate.

The EMCDDA was established by Council Regulation (EEC) No 302/93 of 8 February 1993. It was created to provide the European Community and its member states with "objective, reliable and comparable information" on drugs and drug addiction.
Objectives[edit | edit source]
The main objectives of the EMCDDA are to:
- Collect and analyze information on drug use and drug addiction in Europe.
- Monitor the drug situation and the responses to it.
- Disseminate data and information on drugs and drug addiction.
- Develop tools and instruments to improve the quality of data collection and analysis.
Activities[edit | edit source]
The EMCDDA carries out a range of activities, including:
- Publishing an annual report on the state of the drug problem in Europe.
- Operating the European Drug Report and the European Drug Emergencies Network (Euro-DEN).
- Conducting studies and surveys on various aspects of drug use and addiction.
- Collaborating with national and international organizations to improve data collection and analysis.
Structure[edit | edit source]
The EMCDDA is governed by a Management Board, which includes representatives from each EU member state, the European Commission, and the European Parliament. The agency is led by a Director, who is responsible for its day-to-day operations.
