As of 2023, there are 6,129 hospitals in the United States. In 2021, there were 6,090 hospitals.

Hospital ownership[edit | edit source]

46.7% of hospitals are non-profit, 20.3% are for-profit, and 26.6% are owned by state and local governments.

Hospital beds[edit | edit source]

In 2020, community hospitals had an average of 2.4 beds per 1,000 people. The number of beds per 1,000 people decreased slightly from 2000 to 2020.

Hospital size[edit | edit source]

Hospitals with 100 or fewer beds are under 200,000 square feet. Hospitals with 101 to 250 beds are 444,000 square feet. Hospitals with more than 250 beds are 1.1 million square feet.
