List of human muscles

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

The human body contains over 600 muscles that play crucial roles in both movement and maintaining posture. Muscles are categorized into three main types: skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscles. This article provides an overview of some of the major muscles found in the human body.

Skeletal Muscles[edit | edit source]

Skeletal muscles, also known as striated muscles, are responsible for moving the skeleton. They are under voluntary control, meaning they are moved by conscious effort. Some of the major skeletal muscles include:

Pectoralis Major[edit | edit source]

The Pectoralis Major is a thick, fan-shaped muscle, situated at the chest of the body. It makes up the bulk of the chest muscles and lies under the breast.

Biceps Brachii[edit | edit source]

The Biceps Brachii is a two-headed muscle located on the upper arm between the shoulder and the elbow. It is involved in the flexion and supination of the forearm.

Deltoid[edit | edit source]

The Deltoid is a triangular muscle located on the uppermost part of the arm and the top of the shoulder. It is responsible for mediating the arm's abduction, flexion, and extension.

Quadriceps Femoris[edit | edit source]

The Quadriceps Femoris is a large muscle group that includes the four prevailing muscles on the front of the thigh. It is the main muscle responsible for knee extension.

Cardiac Muscle[edit | edit source]

The Cardiac muscle is a specialized form of muscle found only in the heart. It is responsible for pumping blood throughout the body.

Smooth Muscles[edit | edit source]

Smooth muscles are located in the walls of hollow organs, such as the intestines, stomach, and bladder, as well as in blood vessels and the uterus. They are responsible for various involuntary movements within the body.
