Orbital bone

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Orbital Bone[edit | edit source]

The Orbital Bone is a complex structure that forms the eye socket in the skull. It is composed of seven bones that come together to form a four-sided pyramid-like shape. The bones include the frontal, zygomatic, maxillary, sphenoid, ethmoid, lacrimal, and palatine.

Structure[edit | edit source]

The orbital bone is not a single bone but a complex structure formed by the convergence of seven bones. These bones form the walls of the orbital cavity, which houses the eye, extraocular muscles, optic nerve, and other important structures.

Frontal Bone[edit | edit source]

The frontal bone forms the superior (upper) wall of the orbit. It is one of the major bones of the skull and contributes to the shape and structure of the forehead.

Zygomatic Bone[edit | edit source]

The zygomatic bone forms the lateral (side) wall of the orbit. It is also known as the cheekbone.

Maxillary Bone[edit | edit source]

The maxillary bone forms the inferior (lower) wall of the orbit. It is one of the major bones of the face and contributes to the shape of the upper jaw.

Sphenoid Bone[edit | edit source]

The sphenoid bone forms the posterior (back) wall of the orbit. It is one of the most complex bones in the human body, with a unique butterfly-like shape.

Ethmoid Bone[edit | edit source]

The ethmoid bone forms part of the medial (inner) wall of the orbit. It is a light, porous bone located between the eyes.

Lacrimal Bone[edit | edit source]

The lacrimal bone is the smallest bone in the human face and forms part of the medial wall of the orbit.

Palatine Bone[edit | edit source]

The palatine bone contributes to the floor of the orbit but is primarily located further back in the nasal cavity.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Due to its location and function, the orbital bone can be affected by various conditions, including orbital fractures, orbital cellulitis, and orbital tumors. These conditions can lead to vision problems, pain, and other symptoms.
