Sama-Bajau people
Sama-Bajau refers to several Austronesian ethnic groups of Maritime Southeast Asia with their origins from the southern Philippines, eastern Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, and parts of Sarawak. The Sama-Bajau are traditionally from the many islands of the Sulu Archipelago, the coastal regions of Mindanao, northern and eastern Borneo, and the Celebes Sea.
History[edit | edit source]
The Sama-Bajau people's history is linked to the sea, with their ancestors being seafaring nomads. They are known for their seafaring skills, and for living in houseboats or stilt houses above coastal waters for centuries. The Sama-Bajau are also known for their traditional lepa and vinta boats.
Culture[edit | edit source]
The Sama-Bajau have a rich cultural heritage, with distinct traditions, arts, music, and dances. The Igal dance, a traditional Sama-Bajau dance, is a significant part of their cultural identity. They are also known for their traditional music, which includes the kulintang, a type of gong instrument, and the gabbang, a xylophone-like instrument.
Religion[edit | edit source]
The majority of the Sama-Bajau people practice Sunni Islam, which they adopted through influence from neighbouring Muslim peoples. However, they also retain elements of their indigenous animistic beliefs, particularly in their rituals and festivals.
Language[edit | edit source]
The Sama-Bajau speak various languages and dialects of the Sama-Bajau language family, which is part of the wider Austronesian language family.
Economy[edit | edit source]
Traditionally, the Sama-Bajau were fishermen and pearl divers. Today, they also engage in off-shore trading, boat making, and other occupations related to the sea.
Diaspora[edit | edit source]
There is a significant Sama-Bajau diaspora in Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines, as well as in other parts of the world. The diaspora has contributed to the spread of Sama-Bajau culture and traditions.
