Up is a 2009 American computer-animated film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The film was directed by Pete Docter, with co-direction by Bob Peterson. The screenplay was written by Docter and Peterson, with the story developed by Docter, Peterson, and Tom McCarthy. The film features the voices of Ed Asner, Christopher Plummer, Jordan Nagai, and Bob Peterson.

Plot[edit | edit source]

The story centers on an elderly widower named Carl Fredricksen (voiced by Ed Asner) and a young boy named Russell (voiced by Jordan Nagai). Carl, a retired balloon salesman, ties thousands of balloons to his house in an attempt to fly to Paradise Falls, a place he and his late wife Ellie had always dreamed of visiting. Along the way, Carl discovers that Russell, a young Wilderness Explorer, has inadvertently become a stowaway on his journey.

During their adventure, they encounter a talking dog named Dug (voiced by Bob Peterson) and a rare bird named Kevin. They also meet the film's antagonist, Charles Muntz (voiced by Christopher Plummer), an explorer who has become obsessed with capturing Kevin to prove his discoveries.

Up premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 13, 2009, and was released in theaters in the United States on May 29, 2009. The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $735 million worldwide. It received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won two, for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score.
