Alogliptin/metformin is a prescription medication used in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes. It is a combination of two active ingredients, alogliptin and metformin, which work together to control high blood sugar levels in people with this condition.

Alogliptin/metformin is a combination of two drugs. Alogliptin belongs to a class of drugs known as DPP-4 inhibitors, while metformin is a biguanide. Both of these drugs work in different ways to lower blood sugar levels.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Alogliptin works by increasing the levels of certain natural substances in the body that lower blood sugar when it is high. Metformin works by decreasing the amount of sugar that the liver produces and the intestines absorb. It also helps to make the body more sensitive to the insulin it naturally produces.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Alogliptin/metformin is used with a proper diet and exercise program to control high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. Controlling high blood sugar helps prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems. Proper control of diabetes may also lessen your risk of a heart attack or stroke.

Common side effects of alogliptin/metformin include nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, diarrhea, or a metallic taste in the mouth. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
