Fluticasone propionate/salmeterol is a combination medication used in the management and prevention of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It contains two active ingredients: fluticasone propionate, a corticosteroid, and salmeterol, a long-acting beta-2 agonist.

Fluticasone propionate/salmeterol consists of two components. Fluticasone propionate is a synthetic corticosteroid that exhibits potent anti-inflammatory activity. Salmeterol is a selective long-acting beta-2 adrenoceptor agonist with a long duration of action. It is used for its bronchodilator effect.

Fluticasone propionate works by reducing the swelling and inflammation in the airways, making it easier to breathe. Salmeterol works by relaxing the muscles in the walls of the small air passages in the lungs, helping to keep the airways open and making it easier to breathe.

Fluticasone propionate/salmeterol is indicated for the long-term, twice-daily (morning and evening) administration in the maintenance treatment of asthma and in the prevention of bronchospasm in patients 12 years of age and older with reversible obstructive airway disease, including patients with symptoms of nocturnal asthma.

Common side effects of fluticasone propionate/salmeterol include headache, throat irritation, and upper respiratory tract infection. Serious side effects may include an increased risk of pneumonia, glaucoma, and cataracts.

Contraindications[edit | edit source]

Fluticasone propionate/salmeterol is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients in the product. It should not be used in patients with status asthmaticus or acute episodes of asthma or COPD requiring intensive measures.

Interactions[edit | edit source]

Fluticasone propionate/salmeterol may interact with other drugs including beta-blockers, diuretics, and MAO inhibitors. It is important to inform the healthcare provider of all the medications a patient is taking.
