Inakalant

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Inakalant is a pharmaceutical drug used primarily in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, specifically for the conversion of atrial fibrillation to normal sinus rhythm. It is classified as a class III antiarrhythmic agent.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Inakalant works by blocking specific ion channels in the heart, particularly the potassium channels, which are responsible for repolarization of the cardiac action potential. By inhibiting these channels, Inakalant prolongs the action potential duration and refractory period, thereby stabilizing the cardiac rhythm and preventing abnormal electrical activity that leads to arrhythmias.

Indications[edit | edit source]

Inakalant is indicated for the rapid conversion of recent-onset atrial fibrillation to sinus rhythm in adults. It is particularly useful in cases where atrial fibrillation has been present for less than 48 hours.

Administration[edit | edit source]

Inakalant is administered intravenously under medical supervision. The dosing regimen typically involves an initial bolus followed by a second dose if necessary, depending on the patient's response and clinical condition.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of Inakalant include:

  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Hypotension
  • Bradycardia

Serious adverse effects, although rare, may include:

  • Severe hypotension
  • Prolonged QT interval
  • Torsades de Pointes

Contraindications[edit | edit source]

Inakalant is contraindicated in patients with:

  • Severe heart failure
  • Severe hypotension
  • Prolonged QT interval at baseline
  • Known hypersensitivity to the drug

Clinical Trials[edit | edit source]

Several clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy and safety of Inakalant in converting atrial fibrillation to sinus rhythm. These studies have shown that Inakalant is effective in achieving rapid conversion with a favorable safety profile compared to other antiarrhythmic agents.

Regulatory Status[edit | edit source]

Inakalant is approved for use in several countries, although its availability may vary depending on local regulatory approvals.
