Lymphadenoma

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Lymphadenoma is a rare, benign tumor that originates from the lymphatic system. It is characterized by the proliferation of lymphocytes and epithelial cells, which form a mass in the lymph nodes. Lymphadenoma is not to be confused with lymphadenopathy, which refers to diseases of the lymph nodes, or lymphoma, a type of cancer that begins in the lymphatic system.

Classification[edit | edit source]

Lymphadenoma is classified into two types: sebaceous lymphadenoma and non-sebaceous lymphadenoma. Sebaceous lymphadenoma is a rare variant of lymphadenoma, which is characterized by the presence of sebaceous differentiation. Non-sebaceous lymphadenoma, on the other hand, lacks sebaceous differentiation.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The symptoms of lymphadenoma can vary depending on the location and size of the tumor. Common symptoms include a painless lump or swelling in the neck, armpit, or groin. Other symptoms may include fatigue, weight loss, night sweats, or fever.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of lymphadenoma is typically made through a biopsy of the affected lymph node. The biopsy sample is then examined under a microscope to identify the presence of abnormal cells. Other diagnostic tests may include blood tests, imaging tests, and a physical examination.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for lymphadenoma typically involves surgical removal of the tumor. In some cases, radiation therapy or chemotherapy may be used to shrink the tumor before surgery. The choice of treatment depends on the size and location of the tumor, as well as the patient's overall health.

Prognosis[edit | edit source]

The prognosis for individuals with lymphadenoma is generally good, as the tumor is benign and does not spread to other parts of the body. However, recurrence of the tumor is possible, and regular follow-up appointments are necessary to monitor for any signs of recurrence.
