Undergraduate

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Undergraduate education is the post-secondary education previous to the postgraduate education. It includes all the academic programs up to the level of a Bachelor's degree. For example, in the United States, an entry level university student is known as an undergraduate, while students of higher degrees are known as graduate students. In some other educational systems and subjects, undergraduate education is post-secondary education up to the level of a master's degree; this is the case for some science courses in Britain and some medicine courses in Europe.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Undergraduate education is education conducted after secondary education and prior to post-graduate education. It typically includes all post-secondary programs up to the level of a bachelor's degree. For example, in the United States, an entry level university student is known as an undergraduate, while students of higher degrees are known as graduate students. In some other educational systems, undergraduate education is post-secondary education up to the level of a master's degree; this is the case for some science courses in Britain and some medicine courses in Europe.

United States[edit | edit source]

In the United States, undergraduate students are those pursuing bachelor's, associate's, or certificates. Students are classified according to the year of study they are in: Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior. The bachelor's degree typically takes four years to complete, though some students take longer due to part-time study or transferring schools.

United Kingdom[edit | edit source]

In the United Kingdom, undergraduate education is often in the form of a three-year bachelor's degree or a four-year master's degree. The first year students are often referred to as "freshers", the second year as "sophomores", and the final year as "seniors". Some universities also offer a two-year associate degree.

Australia[edit | edit source]

In Australia, undergraduate degrees are often in the form of a three-year bachelor's degree or a four-year honours degree. The honours degree is often a prerequisite for postgraduate studies.
