Intracranial tumor
Intracranial Tumor
An Intracranial Tumor is a neoplasm that occurs within the cranial cavity. These tumors can be benign or malignant, and they can originate from various types of tissues, including the brain, meninges, cranial nerves, pituitary gland, and pineal gland. Intracranial tumors can also arise from metastatic spread of cancers occurring elsewhere in the body.
Types of Intracranial Tumors[edit | edit source]
There are several types of intracranial tumors, including:
- Gliomas: These are the most common type of primary brain tumor. They originate from the glial cells that support and protect the neurons in the brain.
- Meningiomas: These tumors arise from the meninges, the layers of tissue that cover the brain and spinal cord.
- Pituitary adenomas: These are benign tumors that occur in the pituitary gland.
- Vestibular schwannomas: Also known as acoustic neuromas, these tumors develop on the nerves that control balance and hearing.
- Medulloblastomas: These are malignant tumors that occur primarily in children and originate in the cerebellum, the part of the brain responsible for coordination and balance.
Symptoms[edit | edit source]
The symptoms of an intracranial tumor can vary widely depending on its size, location, and rate of growth. Common symptoms can include:
- Headache
- Nausea and vomiting
- Seizures
- Cognitive or personality changes
- Hearing loss
- Vision problems
- Balance or coordination problems
Diagnosis[edit | edit source]
Diagnosis of an intracranial tumor typically involves a neurological examination, imaging studies such as MRI or CT scan, and sometimes a biopsy.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
Treatment options for intracranial tumors depend on the type, size, and location of the tumor, as well as the patient's overall health. Treatment can include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of these.
