Lymphosarcoma

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Lymphosarcoma is a type of lymphoma, which is a group of blood cell tumors that develop from lymphocytes. The name often refers to just the cancerous ones rather than all such tumors. Signs and symptoms may include enlarged lymph nodes, fever, drenching sweats, unintended weight loss, itching, and constantly feeling tired. The enlarged lymph nodes are usually painless. The sweats are most common at night.

Causes[edit | edit source]

The exact cause of lymphosarcoma is unknown. However, it is believed to be caused by mutations in the DNA of a type of white blood cell called lymphocytes. This mutation causes the lymphocytes to multiply and accumulate, and they live longer than they should. Lymphosarcoma can occur at any age but it is most common in people aged 60 and above.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Lymphosarcoma is diagnosed through a series of tests including physical examination, blood tests, imaging tests and lymph node biopsy. The stage of the cancer is determined through a process called staging, which helps in planning the treatment.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for lymphosarcoma depends on the type and stage of the disease, possible side effects, and the patient's overall health and preferences. Treatment options include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, stem cell transplant, immunotherapy, or medication.

Prognosis[edit | edit source]

The prognosis of lymphosarcoma depends on the type, stage, and grade of the cancer, as well as the patient's overall health. Some people with lymphosarcoma may have a good prognosis, while others may not.
