Parathyroid cancer

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Parathyroid cancer is a rare disease resulting from a malignant (cancerous) cell found in the parathyroid gland. The parathyroid glands are four pea-sized organs found in the neck near the thyroid gland. They produce parathyroid hormone, which helps control the amount of calcium in the blood.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

Parathyroid cancer often causes hypercalcemia, a condition characterized by abnormally high levels of calcium in the blood. Symptoms of hypercalcemia include:

  • Kidney stones
  • Frequent urination
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Depression
  • Poor appetite
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Confusion
  • Coma

Causes[edit | edit source]

The exact cause of parathyroid cancer is unknown. However, it is believed that certain genetic mutations may play a role in its development.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Parathyroid cancer is often diagnosed through a combination of physical examination, blood tests, and imaging tests. A biopsy may also be performed to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for parathyroid cancer typically involves surgery to remove the tumor. Other treatments may include radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy.

Prognosis[edit | edit source]

The prognosis for parathyroid cancer varies depending on the stage of the disease and the patient's overall health. However, with early detection and treatment, the prognosis can be quite good.
