Hashimoto struma

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Hash oil, also known as cannabis oil or dabs, is an oily substance derived from Cannabis, a plant species with three primary varieties: Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis. Hash oil is a concentrated form of cannabis, due to the high concentration of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive compound in the plant.

History[edit | edit source]

The use of hash oil dates back to the 19th century, when it was used in traditional medicine in areas such as the Middle East and South Asia. It was introduced to Western medicine in the mid-19th century and was used for pain relief, muscle spasms, and to induce sleep.

Production[edit | edit source]

Hash oil is produced by separating the resin from cannabis plants by using a solvent extraction process. The most common method involves using a solvent such as butane, which is passed through the cannabis material. The solvent strips away the plant's cannabinoids, including THC, and the resulting liquid is then evaporated to leave behind the oil.

Consumption[edit | edit source]

Hash oil can be consumed in several ways. It can be smoked, vaporized, orally ingested, or used topically. When smoked or vaporized, the effects are typically felt within minutes. When ingested orally, the effects are slower to onset but last longer.

Legality[edit | edit source]

The legality of hash oil varies by country and in some cases, by state or province. In some jurisdictions, it is classified as a controlled substance, while in others it is legal for medical and/or recreational use.

Health effects[edit | edit source]

The health effects of hash oil are similar to those of other forms of cannabis. Short-term effects can include euphoria, altered perception, and increased heart rate. Long-term use can lead to addiction and mental health problems, particularly among heavy users and those who begin use in adolescence.
