Hypoadrenocorticism

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Hypoadrenocorticism is a medical condition characterized by insufficient production of adrenal hormones by the adrenal glands. This condition is also commonly known as Addison's disease.

Causes[edit | edit source]

Hypoadrenocorticism is typically caused by damage to the adrenal glands. This damage can be due to various factors, including autoimmune diseases, infections, and certain medications. In some cases, the cause of hypoadrenocorticism is unknown.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The symptoms of hypoadrenocorticism can vary widely and may include fatigue, muscle weakness, loss of appetite, weight loss, low blood pressure, and skin changes. In severe cases, hypoadrenocorticism can lead to a life-threatening condition known as an adrenal crisis.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of hypoadrenocorticism typically involves blood tests to measure levels of adrenal hormones. Imaging tests, such as CT or MRI scans, may also be used to check for damage to the adrenal glands.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for hypoadrenocorticism usually involves hormone replacement therapy to replace the hormones that the adrenal glands are not producing in sufficient amounts. This treatment is typically lifelong.
