Mentally Ill

The term mentally ill or mental illness refers to a wide range of mental health conditions — disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior. Examples of mental illness include depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders and addictive behaviors.

Definition[edit | edit source]

Mental illnesses, also called mental health disorders, refer to a wide range of mental health conditions that affect thinking, feeling, behavior, and mood. These disorders can affect daily living and may also affect physical health.

Types of Mental Illness[edit | edit source]

There are many different types of mental illness, some of which are:

  • Depression: A common mental disorder that presents with depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, low energy, and poor concentration.
  • Anxiety Disorders: A group of mental disorders characterized by significant feelings of anxiety and fear.
  • Schizophrenia: A severe mental disorder characterized by distortions in thinking, perception, emotions, language, sense of self and behavior.
  • Eating Disorders: Any of a range of psychological disorders characterized by abnormal or disturbed eating habits.
  • Addictive Behaviors: These are behaviors which a person becomes dependent on, and continues, despite it causing them harm.

Causes[edit | edit source]

The exact cause of most mental illnesses is not known. It is thought to be a combination of genetic, biological, psychological, and environmental factors.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for mental illness can involve psychotherapy, medication, peer support, and a healthy lifestyle. In some cases, hospitalization may be needed.
