HIV positive

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

HIV positive refers to the state of having tested positive for the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). This virus attacks the body's immune system, specifically the CD4 cells (T cells), which help the immune system fight off infections. If left untreated, HIV can lead to the disease AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome).

Testing and Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

HIV is diagnosed through testing the blood or oral fluid for the presence of antibodies or antigens to the virus. The HIV test is the only sure way to determine if a person has been infected. It is important to get tested if you have been exposed to certain risk factors, such as unprotected sex, sharing needles, or receiving a blood transfusion before 1985.

Transmission[edit | edit source]

HIV is transmitted through body fluids that include: blood, semen, vaginal and rectal fluids, and breast milk. The virus does not spread through air, water, or casual contact.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

While there is no cure for HIV, it can be controlled with proper medical care. The treatment for HIV is called antiretroviral therapy (ART). If taken as prescribed, this medication can prolong the lives of many people infected with HIV, keep them healthy, and greatly lower their chance of infecting others.

Prevention[edit | edit source]

Prevention strategies include using condoms during sex, not sharing needles, and taking pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) or post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) if at high risk of infection.

Living with HIV[edit | edit source]

Being diagnosed with HIV can be an emotionally difficult experience. However, with proper treatment and care, people with HIV can live long and healthy lives. It's important to connect with a healthcare provider, get linked to HIV care, and start treatment as soon as possible after diagnosis.
