5α-Reductase 2 deficiency

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

5α-Reductase 2 deficiency is a genetic condition that results in a lack of the enzyme 5α-reductase type 2. This enzyme is responsible for the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that plays a role in the development of male sexual characteristics. Individuals with 5α-reductase 2 deficiency have lower levels of DHT and may have varying degrees of undervirilization.
