The United States of America (USA), commonly known as the United States (U.S. or US) or America, is a country primarily located in North America. It consists of 50 states, a federal district, five major unincorporated territories, 326 Indian reservations, and some minor possessions. The capital is Washington, D.C., and the most populous city is New York City.

The United States was founded on July 4, 1776, with the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, which declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. The country was established as a result of the American Revolutionary War, which ended in 1783 with the Treaty of Paris.

The United States Constitution was adopted on September 17, 1787, and has been amended 27 times. The first ten amendments, known as the Bill of Rights, were ratified in 1791 and guarantee many fundamental civil liberties.

Geography[edit | edit source]

The United States is the third-largest country by total area, covering approximately 9.8 million square kilometers. It is bordered by Canada to the north, Mexico to the south, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The country has a diverse geography, including mountains, plains, forests, and deserts.

Government and Politics[edit | edit source]

The United States is a federal republic and a representative democracy with three branches of government: executive, legislative, and judicial. The President is the head of state and government, serving as the chief executive officer. The United States Congress, a bicameral legislature, consists of the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The United States has a mixed-market economy and is considered the world's largest economy by nominal GDP. It is a global leader in technology, finance, and military power. The U.S. dollar is the world's primary reserve currency.

The United States is a melting pot of cultures, ethnicities, and religions. It is known for its diversity, with significant populations of Hispanic and Latino Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, and Native Americans.

American culture is characterized by a strong emphasis on individualism, freedom, and innovation. The country has a rich tradition in music, art, literature, and film, influencing cultures worldwide.
