Diagnosis of Asperger syndrome

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Asperger syndrome is a developmental disorder characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. It is an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but differs from other ASDs by relatively normal language and intelligence.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The two main areas of difficulty in Asperger syndrome are social communication and interaction, and restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities.

Social communication and interaction[edit | edit source]

People with Asperger syndrome may have difficulty understanding and responding to social cues, such as body language, facial expressions, and eye contact. They may also have difficulty understanding and expressing their own emotions. This can make it hard for them to form and maintain relationships.

Restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities[edit | edit source]

People with Asperger syndrome may have a narrow range of interests, which they may pursue intensely. They may also have a need for routine and order, and may become upset if their routine is disrupted.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

The diagnosis of Asperger syndrome is based on the presence of the characteristic symptoms and the exclusion of other conditions that could explain these symptoms. There is no specific test for Asperger syndrome. Instead, the diagnosis is made based on a comprehensive evaluation that includes a medical history, a physical examination, and a variety of psychological and behavioral assessments.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

There is no cure for Asperger syndrome, but treatment can help manage symptoms and improve social skills and communication. Treatment may include behavioral therapy, social skills training, and medication for associated conditions such as anxiety or depression.
