Nephropathy
Nephropathy refers to damage, disease, or other problems with the kidney. It is a broad term that encompasses various conditions, which can be categorized into several types, including diabetic, IgA nephropathy, Membranous nephropathy, and FSGS.
Types of Nephropathy[edit | edit source]
Diabetic Nephropathy[edit | edit source]
Diabetic nephropathy is a serious kidney-related complication of type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. It is also called diabetic kidney disease. Diabetic nephropathy affects the ability of the kidneys to do their usual work of removing waste products and extra fluid from the body.
IgA Nephropathy[edit | edit source]
IgA nephropathy, also known as Berger's disease, is a kidney disease that occurs when IgA deposits build up in the kidneys, causing inflammation that damages kidney tissues. IgA is an antibody—a protein made by the immune system to protect the body from foreign substances such as bacteria or viruses.
Membranous Nephropathy[edit | edit source]
Membranous nephropathy is a kidney disorder that leads to changes and inflammation of the structures inside the kidney that help filter wastes and fluids. The inflammation may lead to problems with kidney function.
Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS)[edit | edit source]
FSGS is a disease in which scar tissue develops on the parts of the kidneys that filter waste out of the blood (glomeruli). FSGS can be caused by a variety of conditions.
Symptoms[edit | edit source]
Symptoms of nephropathy can vary significantly depending on the type and stage of the condition. Common symptoms may include swelling in the hands and feet, protein in the urine, and high blood pressure.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
Treatment for nephropathy typically involves managing the underlying condition that's causing the kidney damage. This may include medication to control high blood pressure, diabetes, or cholesterol. In severe cases, dialysis or a kidney transplant may be necessary.
