Abdala is a COVID-19 vaccine developed by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) in Cuba. It is a protein subunit vaccine, which means it uses a harmless piece of the virus to stimulate an immune response. Abdala is one of the first vaccines developed in Latin America and has been authorized for emergency use in several countries.

Development[edit | edit source]

The development of Abdala began in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic. The vaccine was named after a poem by the Cuban revolutionary José Martí, symbolizing the country's commitment to public health and scientific advancement. The vaccine was developed by the CIGB, a leading Cuban biotechnology institute known for its work in vaccine development.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Abdala is a protein subunit vaccine. It contains a portion of the SARS-CoV-2 virus's spike protein, which is the part of the virus that allows it to enter human cells. By introducing this protein to the immune system, the vaccine trains the body to recognize and fight the virus if exposed in the future. This type of vaccine does not contain live virus, so it cannot cause COVID-19.

Clinical Trials[edit | edit source]

Abdala underwent several phases of clinical trials to assess its safety and efficacy. The trials were conducted in Cuba and involved thousands of participants. The results showed that Abdala had an efficacy rate of over 92% in preventing symptomatic COVID-19 infection, which is comparable to other leading vaccines.

Approval and Use[edit | edit source]

In July 2021, Abdala received emergency use authorization in Cuba. It has since been approved for use in other countries, including Venezuela and Vietnam. The vaccine is administered in a three-dose regimen, with doses given 14 days apart.

Distribution[edit | edit source]

Cuba has been actively distributing Abdala both domestically and internationally. The country has a long history of producing vaccines and has leveraged its expertise to manufacture and distribute Abdala to countries in need. The vaccine is part of Cuba's broader strategy to combat COVID-19 and support global vaccination efforts.
