Gonococcal urethritis
Gonococcal Infection
A Gonococcal infection is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. This bacterium primarily infects the mucous membranes of the body, including the urethra, cervix, throat, and rectum.
Transmission[edit | edit source]
Gonococcal infections are transmitted through sexual contact with an infected person. This includes vaginal, anal, and oral sex. The infection can also be passed from a mother to her baby during childbirth.
Symptoms[edit | edit source]
Symptoms of a gonococcal infection can vary depending on the site of infection. In men, symptoms often include a burning sensation during urination and a white, yellow, or green discharge from the penis. Women may experience increased vaginal discharge, pelvic pain, or bleeding between periods. However, many women with gonococcal infections do not have noticeable symptoms. Infections in the throat or rectum often do not cause symptoms.
Diagnosis[edit | edit source]
Diagnosis of a gonococcal infection is typically made through laboratory testing of a sample taken from the site of infection. This can include a urine sample, a swab of the throat, rectum, or cervix, or a swab of any discharge.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
Treatment for a gonococcal infection typically involves antibiotics. The specific antibiotics used can vary depending on the patient's overall health and the local patterns of antibiotic resistance.
Prevention[edit | edit source]
Prevention of gonococcal infections involves practicing safe sex, including the use of condoms and dental dams. Regular STI testing is also recommended for sexually active individuals.
Complications[edit | edit source]
If left untreated, gonococcal infections can lead to serious complications. In women, this can include pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which can cause infertility. In men, untreated gonococcal infections can lead to epididymitis, a painful condition affecting the testicles that can also lead to infertility.
