McCafé
McCafé is a coffee-house-style food and beverage chain, owned by McDonald's. Conceived and launched in Melbourne, Australia in 1993 by McDonald's Licensee Ann Brown, the chain reflects a consumer trend towards espresso coffees.
History[edit | edit source]
McDonald's introduced McCafé in Australia in 1993, the first ever McCafé opened in the world. The concept was created by McDonald's Australia, starting with Melbourne in 1993. From 2002 to 2003, McDonald's tried to trademark the name "McCafé" in the US, and it started to take off in the mid to late 2000s.
Concept[edit | edit source]
The McCafé concept is a cafe-style accompaniment to McDonald's restaurants in the style of Starbucks. McCafé is a concept created by McDonald's Australia, starting with Melbourne in 1993. As part of the concept, McDonald's offers more upscale coffee products and a limited menu. The concept was designed to attract more upscale customers by offering a café-style area.
Menu[edit | edit source]
The McCafé menu varies in composition, size and price from country to country. Items typically include: cappuccino, latte, espresso, flat white, long black, hot chocolate, mocha, iced coffee, iced mocha, iced latte, iced espresso, and iced chocolate. Some locations also offer limited food items, such as sandwiches and pastries.
Expansion[edit | edit source]
As of 2016, McCafés located within McDonald's outlets were being converted to standalone kiosks in high traffic areas. The standalone kiosks are larger and offer more seating space and a vastly expanded menu compared to the traditional McDonald's. In some markets, the McCafé concept is a full café that also serves McDonald's signature menu.
