Neonatologist
A Neonatologist is a type of pediatrician who specializes in the medical care of newborn infants, particularly the ill or premature newborn. It is a hospital-based specialty, and is usually practiced in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).
Education and Training[edit | edit source]
To become a neonatologist, one must first complete a Bachelor's degree, followed by a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree. After medical school, a pediatric residency is required, followed by a fellowship in neonatology.
Role and Responsibilities[edit | edit source]
Neonatologists diagnose and treat newborns with conditions such as breathing disorders, infections, and birth defects. They also coordinate care and medically manage newborns born premature, critically ill, or in need of surgery.
