The field of advanced heart failure is a branch of cardiology that deals with pacemakers, ventricular assist devices (VADs) and heart transplants. Commonly called heart transplant, or a cardiac transplant, is a surgical transplant procedure performed on patients with end-stage heart failure when other medical or surgical treatments have failed.
